Balance
manufacturer: Conmoto
design: Peter Maly 2004
When the idea of developing new fireplace implements began to grow popular in the late 1990s, manufacturers and designers found themselves venturing onto as yet largely designfree terrain, a situation that was not really new for Peter Maly. He was faced here with the enticing task of reinventing a product type. And he succeeded in this endeavour by applying his well-known double strategy. It goes without saying that in the process he optimized all the tools involved – from bellows to andiron to ash shovel to poker – but at the same time he also lent the old familiar implements a whole new sense of style. They now seem modern and up-to-date, not least due to the unusual choice of materials – but they also exude a feeling as archaic as a discarded sword. After reforming the accessories, it was only logical that he would go on to rethink the fireplace itself. Who could have been better suited to this challenge than systematic thinker Maly, a specialist in wall unit programs? The outcome is the first additive oven in which fireplace and wood storage form co-ordinated modules. The solitary fireplace has been overcome and now the elements can be freely adapted to fit the respective living situation. A bench can also be integrated on the same level. Very elegant: the leg-free version in which balance is exemplified by a horizontal line.
