sideboard Side, design formstelle

What the company with a core team of only seven members and some eight external producers was able to put into operation in the space of just a few years is a good example of a wellfunctioning publishing house system. One can see certain parallels to e15 not only in this sense, but also in the qualityoriented principles and the preferential use of natural materials – both in furnishings and the catalogue – although the Zeitraum team can justifiably claim the creative copyright on this marriage of wood and Modernism as well as on the associated image. The young Munich entrepreneurs have managed to bring about a whole new awareness of materials, as for example Performa has done on other terrain. The product line comprises cabinets, shelves, chairs, tables, beds and small furniture. The focus is on solid wood and the consistent handling of its variety and irregularities. Stylistic models were, in the beginning, the simple furniture of the Shakers, of the Biedermeier era and of other cultures, including sometimes a piece from the flea market. The bulk of designs still come today from the firm’s founders Peter Gaebelein, Birgit Gämmerler and Peter Joebsch. But for a long time now other designers, who are with few exceptions of German origin, have been shaping a broader stylistic idiom. For example, the side table Cube (by Formstelle) has laminated inserts in “pepper red” and “ice blue”. Much Zeitraum furniture is universally applicable, like the chair Sit (by Catharina Lorenz) or the patented shelf system webweb (by Hertel & Klarhoefer). These classics are now joined by the Noon series of cylindrical lights (by El Schmidt) and the Side Comfort upholstered furniture ensemble (by Formstelle), soft sleek cubes that can be ideally combined among themselves or in connection with the cabinet furniture. The firm’s concept also encompasses a professional corporate identity, which has been rewarded by a great deal of attention in the press.
