The family business working out of the cathedral city, already in the third generation, not only paved the way for the desk container in the 1960s, but also for colour ergonomics and environmentally friendly furnishings. In the mid-1990s came a new corporate identity, including design consistently oriented on classical Modernism. Weko developed purist modular furniture, calling its various collections “Baureihen” (Construction Series, a term taken from Gert Wessel) because they were to take up the style of the Dessau Bauhaus. Altogether five different series were created. Baureihe b consists of chairs whose runners describe a rectangle and which do not deny for a minute their reliance on the creations of old masters such as Marcel Breuer or Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Baureihen c, e and m offer minimalist cabinet programs pared down to the essentials, likewise implementing Bauhaus maxims. Finally, Baureihe t adds a flexible table. The multi-award-winning program is based on a uniform construction principle. The foundation of every series is formed by a single tubing cross-section and system node that are the same in every furniture component, which makes components freely combinable. This is an up-to-date interpretation of the principles espoused by the modern movement between the wars. Baureihe e, for example, is a construction kit furniture system with units that, positioned either on top or next to each other, create a very homogeneous impression rather than looking like stacked elements. For formal and ergonomic reasons, and naturally to preserve the clean lines, there are no visible fittings or grips. Doors and drawers open automatically with a gentle press.
