The Tri shelf unit (by Markus Honka), whose signature optical feature is its offset boards, is built by simply sticking the pieces together. Height and width are virtually unlimited. It consists of only a single element type and needs no special parts: an astoundingly constructive brand of minimalism. “Ideas come when you walk through the world with your eyes wide open”, Hubertus Jonas explains. The graduate in business administration with long years of experience in the furnishings industry founded a design-oriented company in Lower Bavaria with his wife, Ellen, into which to pour the sum of their experiences and contacts. Each job begins with an exacting briefing in which the spirit and purpose of the planned design are discussed in detail. After that, nothing takes place without the designers’ input. The entire development and further development of the products is coordinated closely with their authors, who usually come from Germany. A leitmotif is furniture that can be easily assembled and rearranged – if possible without tools – to quickly adapt to the needs of the user. The focus is on shelves and tables. A unique furniture range has come about in this manner within just a few years, distinguished by ingenious ideas, formal rigour and modern materials – an unobtrusive avant-gardism similar to that found in the products of Kaether & Weise, Nils Holger Moormann or Performa. Particularly worthy of note are designs such as the two quite different standing desks Piensa and Nudo (by Bernd Benninghoff and Karsten Weigel) along with Wallflower (by Markus Honka), a mini-shelf made of bent plastic that leans against the wall supported on metal legs, casually but with guaranteed stability. The Lizz folding table (by Martin Dettinger and Christian Hoisl) is as easy as can be to fold and unfold. Grupo (by Meier Thelen) introduced an entire system of small furniture pieces. These objects are once again all about flexibility and easy operation, ongoing themes at Jonas & Jonas
