Wiege
furniture and product design, Bad Münder / Lower Saxony
The development department of the famous office furniture manufacturer Wilkhahn had by the mid-1980s turned itself into an independent design studio. Under the direction of former head designer Klaus Franck, this quickly became an internationally oriented project. The studio today focuses on product and interior design as well as trade fair stands. The bulk of the orders no longer come from the former parent company, but in the realm of office furniture, Wiege is still their most important supplier of ideas. The studio thus developed for Wilkhahn not only the newest generation of cantilevered chairs, but also a series of swivelling office chairs such as Modus, Neos and Solis, in which the emphasis is on ergonomics allowing for dynamic sitting. The complex structure typical for individually adjustable swivel chairs was consciously avoided here. A cleanlined design makes the functions readable and enables their intuitive use. The Cana chair, which can be transformed into a comfortable office lounger, serves other needs. Further solutions for the work routine include the table program Minamo for the Japanese manufacturer Kokuyo and the flexible Suonada room division system for the Turkish office furniture manufacturer Koleksiyon. The team of ten working under the management of Michael Englisch and Jochen Hahne offers the whole development repertoire from idea to model construction and sees its major task as steering clients on a smooth course between “the short cycles of the fashion currents” and the necessity of a “clear design attitude”, with themselves as bastion of the latter.
