Stefan Heiliger
furniture designer, Frankfurt / Hesse
Every self-respecting designer will want to conceive a chair at some time in his or her career. But only a few have made this supreme discipline in the world of design the hub of all their professional creativity, as Stefan Heiliger has done. The fact that he manages to move between the poles of maximized comfort and careful cost control can be understood by looking at his background. Heiliger, whose father was a sculptor, has run a studio for furniture design in Frankfurt since the late 1970s, but before that he worked for several years in the automotive industry. More than once he has been ahead of his time. At the outset of the 1980s he built armchairs with serial spring steel bars, made early use of webbing fabric and developed a folding sofa (1986 for Strässle). This period also saw his first successes with the rocking lounger Aigner Collection (for Hain + Thome) and the functional easychair Spot (for WK Wohnen).
