Luigi Colani
Produkt- und Möbeldesigner, Karlsruhe / Baden-Württemberg
Colani took the trend that had been set off by the Bofinger Chair in 1966 to its conceptual limits. In the foam lounge chair TV-Relax, reissued by Kusch + Co, structural elements such as seat, backrest and legs dissolve into an overall shape reminiscent of a jet aeroplane, but also of a sculpture by Henry Moore. That Colani’s soft, organic style has ergonomic advantages, especially when it comes to sitting, is obvious. For COR the inspired moulder of form designed innovative products around 1970 including the racy one-legged shell chair Polycor (-> p.25) and the upholstery series Orbis. Probably his most well-known seating furniture is Zocker, a legless plastic chair that came in a blocky children’s version and a more streamlined model for adults. In the field of children’s furniture he was likewise a pioneer. It hardly comes as a surprise that this man with his many slogans and contradictions at some point turned his back on Germany, where his effulgent style simply couldn’t squeeze itself into the p revailing rationalist grid. A stint in Japan was particularly triumphant. Now he has come home again and is celebrating a comeback along with the biomorphic forms he once spearheaded. The master of curves is finally recognized today for what he always knew himself to be: one of the true greats.
