Plattenbau

manufacturer: Kaether & Weise
design: Florian Petri 2004

Unlike many other shelf systems that hide their construction secrets, these are in plain view in Plattenbau (German for “prefabricated building”) from Kaether & Weise. The shelf modules are equipped with a visible peg system that allows them to be assembled without tools. Since all elements - i.e. both horizontal and vertical panels – are made of a highpressure laminate, they can be milled using CNC technology. This guarantees absolute consistency. Florian Petri’s design derives its elegance not least from the use of panels that are only four millimetres thick. The Berlin designer made this leanness possible by basing the construction principle on a T-beam. Horizontal and vertical bracing ribs increase the loadbearing capacity many times over, allowing both for extreme heights and for shipping in conveniently small packages. A six-shelf unit fits in a briefcase. Lightness, stability and weightbearing capacity thus enter into a happy liaison. Finally, various panel heights, depths and widths as well as hanging doors and back walls make the minimal shelf system extremely variable.
