Mars

manufacturer: ClassiCon
design: Konstantin Grcic 2003

Mars is an in-between thing: a chair judging by its height, but also an upholstered easychair. The synthetic resign body is covered in fabric or leather – an out-of-the-ordinary solution that makes the chair look as though it were dressed. Largely lacking in right angles, Mars has a surface structure full of oblique lines. Its figure is defined in particular by the projecting, slightly tapered seat and the quite massive base that widens towards the floor. These elements are joined by a surface compiled like a collage out of basic geometric forms and defined by its edges. The pattern here is made up of rectangles and triangles. Conspicuous is a crease that runs down the middle from top to bottom. All of this lends Mars its unconventional proportions and a silhouette that, as already seen in Konstantin Grcic’s Diana and Pallas tables, recalls the works of the Russian Constructivists. When covered in rich red or black fabric, this association comes even more strongly to the fore. Mars not only looks unusual; its moulded seat, lower in the middle and inclined slightly backward, also makes it exceptionally comfortable.
