Dono
manufacturer: Rolf Benz
design: Christian Werner 2004
The sofa developed to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Rolf Benz company was originally planned as a new version of Addiform, the product that captured the spirit of the 1960s so well that it put the firm on the road to success. But Christian Werner refused to do a mere redesign job. Instead, he translated the design triumph of yesteryear into something more in step with the present: a sofa to fit today’s lifestyle. After all, the function of the sofa has changed in many ways. Like the living room, it has increasingly lost its formal character and become part of a personal, almost intimate space in which a wide variety of activities are carried out with the most diverse paraphernalia and in just as many different positions. Therefore, Dono was to be above all versatile, an aspiration that Werner fulfilled using amazingly simple means. The main body is a rectangular slab with a large, open area for reclining. Replacing the otherwise expected backrest is a shelf onto which two cushions can be fixed in any position desired. Dono can thus be transformed into a bed with lightning speed, paired to form a corner sofa or - with the addition of cushions doing double duty as a rm rests – can play the part of a classic two-seater.
