Design Edition
manufacturer: JAB Anstötz
design: Konstantin Grcic, Peter Maly u.a. 2000
The idea of launching a modern carpet collection by five designers from four European countries – Rodolfo Dordoni, Konstantin Grcic, Ross Lovegrove, Peter Maly and Pascal Morgue – was in and of itself an innovation. Maly took charge of the co-ordination and contributed an extensive series of rugs. The serial, square motifs look like abstract pictures in an exhibition, but they can still be walked on. Despite all the purism of his designs, the master of industrial minimalist art declared that his goal was to lend these rugs “a third dimension”. He therefore varied the height of the pile as one graphic element. What intrigued Grcic about this assignment was its connection to architecture. His carpet was not to be an accessory, but rather a constitutive element of the building. The second edition came out in 2004, featuring exclusively German designers: Studio Vertijet, Christian Werner, the in-house team from the JAB Teppiche studio and Maly again. This time, there were prescribed themes. In the case of Studio Vertijet, the focus was Mediterranean country house style. The resulting rugs are handmade of pure wool, supplemented by elements in silk, metal and leather. The rich nuances are meant to reflect the intense colours and the light of the South. Plans are to add further chapters to the authors’ carpet series.
