Couch

manufacturer: elmarflötotto

A “couch” is casual and comfortable and isn’t necessarily out to impress anyone. The product name already reveals its aim: a cosy and robust piece of upholstered furniture for daily use. Munich designer Stefan Diez discovered a new kind of construction to achieve this end. A canvas interior structure is filled with foam and ergofill beads, which not only create stability but also lend the whole an eye-catching form. Put together out of squares (even the seat formed by equally high armrests and backrest forms a square) the simple form recalls in its simplicity designs from the 1920s, such as the Bauhaus- Kubus from Peter Keler (today made by Tecta). Diez derives the rules governing the series from simple geometry. Minimal variations lead to an easychair, footstool and bench. The pieces come in neutral colours like grey or white, but also in shrill yellow, light blue or light green. The washable outer cover is extremely durable (although not when it comes to rain!). This footless
furniture is made in China, but only filled after transport to save on costs. The interior sack is  divided into various chambers using drawstrings and then the filling is blown in using a kind of reverse vacuum cleaner. Then the outer sack is pulled over the whole. The end points of the inner cords are visible as points punctuating the exterior. This “quilted” structure makes for lively surfaces reminiscent of the club chairs of the olden days.
