Coat Rack

manufacturer: Performa
design: Martin Kleinhans 2001

The springboard for this design was a client who was looking for a place for her entire family to hang their coats. In response, Martin Kleinhans developed a coat rack meant to grow with the needs of the family, exhibiting the utmost in simplicity in both looks and functionality. The basic concept was to provide parallel slits into which various hooks and shelves could be slid and held firmly in place through their own tension. Children would use the bottom slits, adults the upper ones. So much for the obvious uses of what is in principle a classic wallhung coat rack. But the two-centimetre interval between the block and wall already indicates that this is not only a mundane object of everyday use, but also a monochromatic sculpture. The square-shaped hook holder is elevated above the ordinary by its pristine surface, which turns it into a perfect body in space. Compounding this impression of hermetic closure is the soft skin of linoleum or rubber. Incidentally, not only clothes can be hung on the Performa Garderobe; it can also form the basis for a personal installation of photos or other private objects.
